Evolution Korea

Until recently the Korean scientific community been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that doing so might give the movement more credibility. However, silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to get rid of textbooks that describe evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process through which people with advantages survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the creation and evolution of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, this genetic variability can cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological traits in a population. Natural selection is the main force behind the most evolutionary changes. However, non-genetic changes such as the increase in muscle mass due to diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their campaign to exclude evolution from textbooks for high school which includes the removal of references to the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology that helps scientists to understand how living organisms work and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world, and to make useful discoveries including the development of new drugs.

The evidence for biological evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory can explain more about the universe and the life on our planet. It has been thoroughly examined and confirmed for many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, believe in the theory of evolution as a scientific fact. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.

In reality many religious individuals have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For instance certain Christians believe that God created the world through evolution, and that humans share an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is important that scientists and educators speak out for teaching evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement has been rising. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief vary. Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing treatments, while others are motivated by a desire to improve animal and plant species, typically for the benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, while still others have a deep religious belief in God and are seeking to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and 에볼루션 all that is in it. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Although Creationists may not all be Christian, many are. Creationists typically fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this view, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species similar to the original.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from nonliving matter.

In general, the creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Certain scientists and educational institutions, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an unflattering image for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This sparked an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught today.
